After the Flood: Nurturing Resilience from the Gut How Inner Care Helps Us Weather the Storm
After the Flood: Nurturing Resilience from the Gut How Inner Care Helps Us Weather the Storm

This is the first in a gentle, four-part series on resilience—each week, we’ll explore how to nurture strength and steadiness from within, especially when the world outside feels overwhelming. I invite you to walk this path with me, one step at a time.

🍃🍃🍃

Kia ora wonderful community,

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been through some wild weather lately—floods, storms, and all the chaos that comes with them. First off, I just want to acknowledge how much you’ve been through. It’s a lot. Sometimes it feels like life’s been shaken up like a snow globe, and we’re all waiting for the pieces to settle.

I’ve been reflecting on how, in times like these, nurturing resilience isn’t just about rebuilding on the outside. Sometimes the most profound healing happens quietly, within—especially in our gut, that wise and often-overlooked ecosystem inside us.

🌱 Why Gut Health Matters After Crisis 🌱

Stress (the kind that comes with natural disasters) doesn’t just live in our minds—it shows up in our bodies, and especially in our gut. You might notice:

  • Tummy troubles (hello, bloating, cramps, or just a weird appetite)
  • Sleep that feels all over the place
  • Feeling wired, tired, or just not quite yourself

This is your body’s way of trying to protect you. But just like we can rebuild our homes, we can also gently tend to our inner world.

🌸 3 Gentle Ways to Soothe Your Gut & Mind 🌸

1. Kindness on Your Plate 🍲
Go easy on yourself and your digestion. Warm, simple foods—like soup, stews, or cooked veggies—are easier for your body to handle when you’re stressed. It’s like giving your gut a soft place to land.

2. Pause to Breathe 🌬️
Even a few deep breaths can signal safety to your nervous system, helping your gut (and your mind) let go of some of that tension. Try pausing for a minute of slow breathing before meals, or whenever the overwhelm hits.

3. Connect (in Small Ways) 🤗
Whether it’s sharing a cuppa with a neighbor, a chat with a friend, or just sitting quietly in nature, connection is powerful medicine. It reminds your body and mind that you’re not alone—and that there’s safety and support around you.

🍲 Bonus Recipe: Soothing Pumpkin Soup (with Gut-Loving Options for Everyone!) 🍲

Whether you’re in need of deep nourishment or just want a bowl of cozy comfort, this pumpkin soup is gentle on the gut and easy to adapt for all eaters.

You’ll Need:

1 small pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled and chopped
2 carrots, sliced
1 onion, chopped
2–3 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated (optional for extra warmth)
4 cups bone broth (for omnivores) or quality veggie stock (for vegans/vegetarians)
1 can coconut milk (or use oat or almond milk for a lighter touch)
Olive oil or coconut oil
Sea salt & black pepper
Fresh herbs: parsley, coriander, or chives to finish

How to Make It:

In a large pot, heat a splash of olive or coconut oil. Sauté onions, garlic, and ginger until soft and fragrant.
Add chopped pumpkin and carrots, stir, and let them get a bit golden.
Pour in your bone broth or veggie stock. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook until veggies are soft (about 20–25 minutes).
Blend until silky smooth (a stick blender makes this super easy).
Stir in coconut milk. Warm through, then season with salt and pepper.
Serve with fresh herbs and maybe a drizzle of olive oil or swirl of coconut cream.

Why Your Gut Loves This:
Pumpkin and carrots are gentle, nourishing, and packed with fiber for your friendly microbes. Bone broth supports gut lining, while coconut milk is soothing and anti-inflammatory. The vegan version is just as nurturing—sometimes comfort is about warmth, flavor, and a little kindness, whatever you choose to put in your bowl.

If you give it a try, let me know! I’d love to hear how you make it your own.

🌻 Nature’s Wisdom: You’re Built to Recover 🌻

Just like the land slowly recovers after a flood, your body holds an incredible capacity for healing and balance—even if you feel a bit waterlogged right now. Be gentle with yourself. Take things one small step at a time.
