Rewilding Your Inner Garden: Daily Rituals for a Thriving Microbiome. Part 3 of 4 in our Resilience Series

Kia ora, beautiful souls,

If you’ve been following along, you already know that true resilience starts from within. In Part 1, we honored the wisdom of gentle recovery after the storm. In Part 2, we explored how the gut and stress are nature’s dance partners. Now, it’s time for a little magic: rewilding your inner ecosystem, one joyful step at a time. 🌱

After the Flood: Tending New Life 🌧️➡️🌸
Imagine your garden after a flood—muddy, perhaps a little battered, but full of hidden potential. The soil is rich, the air is fresh, and nature is quietly preparing for a new burst of life. In the same way, after stress or illness, your gut is ready for renewal.

But here’s the thing: a truly vibrant garden isn’t just tidy rows of the same old plants. It’s wild edges, self-seeding herbs, bees buzzing, and a riot of color. Diversity is nature’s secret to resilience—and the same goes for your microbiome.

Why Diversity Matters (Inside & Out!) 🦋
Modern life, with its processed foods, antibiotics, and stress, can turn our inner world into a bit of a monoculture—like a pine plantation instead of a thriving native forest. But don’t worry! Just as nature bounces back, so can we.

The more diverse your gut microbes, the more resilient you become—body, mind, and spirit. A wild, varied microbiome can help you weather life’s storms (and the occasional pizza night 🍕) with more ease and energy.

Joyful Ways to Rewild Your Gut 🎉
Let’s turn rewilding into a little adventure. Here are some playful, practical ways to invite more diversity into your daily rhythm:

1. Eat the Rainbow—Literally! 🌈
Aim for 30+ different plant foods each week. That sounds wild, but when you count herbs, nuts, seeds, veggies, fruits, and even different kinds of grains, it adds up fast!
Tip: Keep a “rainbow chart” on your fridge and celebrate each new color. 🟩🟧🟪

2. Forage, Grow, or Just Try Something New (Yacon, Anyone?) 🥗
No need to scale a mountain—just picking a new herb at the market, snipping fresh parsley from a windowsill, or adding dandelion greens to a salad is a win. And if you want to really surprise your gut (and your tastebuds), have you ever tried yacon?

Yacon is one of my absolute favorites—an unassuming root vegetable that looks a bit like a sweet potato, but when you slice it open, it’s crisp and juicy, almost like a pear or a mild apple. The magic? It’s loaded with prebiotic fiber called fructooligosaccharides, which basically feeds all those good gut bugs and helps them flourish. And honestly, it’s so versatile—slice it raw into salads for a sweet crunch, roast it, stir-fry it, or even add it to smoothies.

Here’s the best part: yacon is ridiculously easy to grow, even if you’re convinced you have “bad soil” or a black thumb. Just pop a tuber in the ground, give it a bit of sun and water, and let nature do its thing. In a few months, you’ll be digging up a bounty for your gut and your kitchen. Every time I harvest yacon, it feels like unearthing hidden treasure—sweet, crunchy, and oh-so-good for you. 🪴

Confession: The first time I shared yacon with friends, they thought I’d given them a cross between a potato and a nashi pear… and now they’re hooked! Try it if you get the chance—your microbiome will throw a little party. 🎊

3. Embrace Ferments from Every Culture (Sauerkraut Party, Anyone?) 🥬🎈
Sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, kefir, tempeh, kombucha—the world is deliciously fermented! These foods are packed with beneficial bacteria, and a little goes a long way to help your gut garden thrive.

And here’s a fun secret: making sauerkraut doesn’t have to be a solo mission. Why not invite a few friends over and have a sauerkraut-making party? All you need is some cabbage, salt, a few big bowls, and a willingness to get your hands a little messy. There’s something wildly satisfying about massaging cabbage together, telling stories, and watching simple ingredients transform into jars of tangy, probiotic-rich goodness.

Pro tip: If you have a food processor, it makes shredding cabbage a breeze—leaving you with more time for laughter, tea, and maybe a little spontaneous kitchen dancing. 💃

If you’ve never hosted a kraut party, I highly recommend it—there’s magic in the process, and you get to share the bounty (and a few giggles) with your community. Plus, everyone goes home with a jar of homemade goodness and a boosted microbiome. Win-win! 🫙

4. Rotate Your Staples 🔄
Swap out your usual grains, beans, or veggies for something different each week. Millet instead of rice, lentils instead of chickpeas, purple carrots instead of orange—your gut loves surprises.

5. Play in the Dirt (Safely!) 🦶🌏
Gardening, walking barefoot on safe ground, or just being in nature helps connect you to friendly microbes. Plus, it’s good for the soul.

Gentle Reminders—It’s Not About Perfection 🧘‍♀️
Rewilding isn’t about a strict diet or “getting it right.” It’s about curiosity, joy, and tiny acts of care. Try one new thing this week, and celebrate! Your gut is listening, and every small step counts.

And if you have a kitchen disaster (who hasn’t?), just remember: even compost feeds the garden. 😉
